Redlands Heritage Home Tour & Quilt Show
Saturday, May 13, 2006
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The 5th Annual Redlands Heritage Home Tour and Quilt Show will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2006 sponsored by the Redlands Area Historical Society, Inc. (RAHS) and the Citrus Belt Quilt Guild (CBQ). The event provides a step back in history to experience heritage arts, crafts, music and architecture from our past. As in previous years, over 300 quilts made or owned by members of the Quilt Guild will be on display in historic downtown Redlands and in six heritage homes. The event is one of many planned for the Redlands Festival Series 2006 which celebrates the citrus, heritage and culture of Redlands. The walking tour and various supporting activities will be held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
A Salute to the Red, White & Blue
This year, in honor of the 230th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 5th observance of the 9-11-01 tragedy, the theme glorifies the founding of the United States of America. Patriotism will be the resounding buzz word of the day as visitors enjoy quilting demonstrations. This will include “Quilters and the Presidency through the Ages”, with blocks and quilts depicting U.S. Presidents, their campaign slogans and much more. Americana quilts, in the colors of the U.S. flag will be displayed in the park as well.
Bonus Experience
Along with the usual five historic homes, the Morey Mansion located at 190 Terracina Boulevard in Redlands (just a short drive from downtown) is available for viewing decorated with quilts. The second floor will feature a private Civil War collection of family quilts from Laura Vroman; an active Redlander. This glorious mansion has been dubbed “America’s Favorite Victorian”! Come see the splendor of this beautiful home.
Special Presentations
At 11:30 a.m., “A Salute to American Heroes” program will honor surviving family members from Flight 93 as they are presented with the Citrus Belt Quilters’ gift of the “Let’s Roll” quilt, made for the memorial planned for the crash site in Pennsylvania. The quilt lists the names of all of those on board.
In another special presentation, the “North Dakota Fallen heroes” quilt will be presented to Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands, or his representative, who will present it to the congressman from North Dakota in Washington, D.C. This quilt honors the soldiers who have fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Citrus Belt Quilters’ auctioneer extraordinaire Cathy Brown will conduct a live quilt auction at noon in front of the Lincoln Memorial Shrine, and at 4 p.m. the winning ticket for the Citrus Belt Quilters’ opportunity quilt, “Fallen Timbers, a Salute to the Heroes of 9/11,” will be drawn.
Heritage Homes
Six heritage homes will be open for touring the day of the event. Each of the homes is in walking distance from main events held in the historic Smiley Park area. The homes will have displays of many beautiful quilts.
