April 2012 Program - “The History of the A.K.Smiley Public Library Heritage Room

On Monday, April 23 Dr. Larry Burgess and Don McCue will discuss the 40 year history of the Heritage Room collection at the Smiley Library. The Heritage Room has an extensive collection on the history of Redlands and Southern California. There is the California Collection, The Carnegie indian Collection, the A.K. Smiley Family Collection, the Gerald A. Smith Indian Collection, the Nordhoff-Morrison-Stillman Collection and the Citrus Industry Collection. The Historical Society celebrates its long standing partnership with the Heritage Room. The speakers will discuss the operation of the collection, where it’s been and where it is going.

In 1923, the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival was founded by Grace Stewart Mullen. For the last 89 years the festival has had performances seen by over 8 million persons. The festival is the oldest continuous music festival in the United States at which no admission is charged.

Marsha Gebara will be presenting the history of the Redlands Bowl and the Redlands Community Music Association at our March meeting. March was honored as Redlands Woman of the Year in 2001. She received the Redlands Town and Gown Award in 2000 and the Round Table Grail Award in 2011. She presently serves as the Program Director for the Redlands Community Music Association.

Growing Up in Redlands Panel Discussion - Monday 2/27

A panel of distinguished experts will discuss what it was like to grow up in Redlands during the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s. They will explore what a typical day was like for a child in the 1920’s. How the Depression Era affected their families and daily life. What was school life like at Redlands High School. They will also look at how World War II changed the lives of families in Redlands. The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the A.K. Smiley Library.

Part II of Cajon Street Walking Tour - Saturday 2/18

Tom Atchley will lead the second part of a walking tour of Cajon Street on Saturday, February 18. The tour will start at 9:00 a.m. at the corner of Cajon Street and Cypress Avenue. The tour will finish at Cajon and Citrus Avenue. Cost of the tour is $10/person.

Cajon Street Walking Tour on Saturday, February 11

Tom Atchley will be leading Part I of a walking tour of Cajon Street starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 11 at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Cajon Street. The tour will end at the intersection of Cajon Street and Cypress Avenue. Part II of the walking tour will be held on Saturday, February 18th at 9:00 a.m. This tour will start at the intersection of Cajon Street and Cypress Avenue and end at Cajon and Citrus Avenue. The cost of the tours are $10/person.

January 23 Meeting - “Redlands’ Civil War Veterans”

On Monday evening, January 23 the Redlands Area Genealogical Society will be presenting a program on the Civil War Veterans that lived in Redlands. Ron Running and his group of volunteers have been researching the lives of all 151 veterans that are buried in the Hillside cemetery. Come and learn about the diverse and interesting lives of these remarkable individuals. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the assembly room of the A.K. Smiley Public Library at 125 West Vine Street, Redlands.

Annual Hillside Memorial Park Tour on Saturday (10/22)

A walking tour of historic Hillside Memorial Park will be lead by Tom Atchley at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22nd. The tour will begin in front of the old mausoleum and will be approximately one and one-half hours long. Cost is $10/person.

Historic Preservation Panel, Monday (10/24)

On Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. the Historical Society will be hosting a panel discussion entitled “Historic Preservation - Is It Worth It?”. The meeting will be held at the historic Mitten Building at 345 N. Fifth Street in Redlands. Panelists will include the former director of the Claremont Preservation Foundation, president of the Old Riverside Foundation, and local preservationalist Dr. Terry Vines.

The purpose of the panel will be to explore the history of preservation efforts in Redlands and other communities in the Inland Empire. Is Historic Preservation worth it in today’s economy? should we be doing more to further preservation efforts in Redlands? What are some incentives that other communities are using to preserve their historic resources?

All members of the public are welcome.

Redlands Historic Preservation Week (10/22 to 10/29)

The Historical Society and the Redlands Conservancy are jointly sponsoring and celebrating Redlands Historic Preservation Week during the last week of October. The impetus of having Preservation Week is the fact that the California State Historic Resources Commission will be holding their fall meeting in the Casa Loma Room at the University of Redlands on Friday (10/28) at 9 a.m. The Commission will be reviewing nominations to the State and National register of Historic Places.

Center Street Walking Tour - Part II Saturday (10/15)

The second half of the walking tour of Center street will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 9 a.m. Participants should meet at the corner of Center Stret and West Cypress Avenue. The tour will end at Center Street and West Olive Avenue at McKinley School. The tour will be lead by Tom Atchley. Cost is $10/person. The tour will include Victorian homes, Heritage Award homes, Craftsman, Pueblo, Spanish Revival and our own Normandie Court.
